This 3-day course is designed for international PhD students from all fields to explore the societal and ecological impact of their research projects, emphasizing theoretical innovation and practical relevance. Gathering junior and senior researchers who are working with questions of how to study ecological concerns and matters from within daily social practices, it analyzes challenges in conceptualizing and empirically working at the intersection of subjective experiencing and collective action. It invites discussions of how culturally and materially grounded, more situated approaches to conceptualizing ‘subjectivity’ could help with shedding light on the wicked complexities of studying ecological and social sustainability and justice as entangled processes. In this context, it reflects on the politics of knowledge-making across disciplinary boundaries and its consequences for understanding and tackling current planetary crises.
